UNITED WAY FACTS

1888

The first joint appeal in Denver, Colorado, a Priest, two Ministers and a Rabbi responded to a community crisis - $21,700 raised.

1894

Charitable organizations were exempt from the first Federal act.

1895

More than 100 charitable organizations were organized.

1930’s

United Ways influenced legislators to adopt policies designed to encourage charitable giving and foster community problem solving.

1931

Herbert Hoover kicked off the Community Chest Fund. Despite the Depression that year funds raised surpassed the $100 million mark.

1936

Corporations permitted to deduct charitable contributions of up to 5% of net income.

1955

United Funds began to sweep the nation. 1,850 United Funds were in operation raising $310 million.

1959

Local United Funds adopted formulas to respond to pressing community needs.

1970’s
& 80’s

There were cutbacks of generous funds hurting many programs. Demand for services, however, increased rapidly. United Ways find new solutions by forming partnerships.

1977

The United Way of Tri-State was formed – New York – New Jersey – Connecticut. $161 million raised.

1987

The United Way movement marks 100 Years of community services. U.S. Government issued the 22¢ stamp. Congress appropriated grants to the National United Way to help U.W. agencies’ programs for emergency food and shelter for the needy.

 1988 While many United Ways had increased contributions, Bloomfield United Way contributions have been shrinking. Yet the needs of our Bloomfield residents continue to increase at an alarming rate.

2001
-2005

The United Way was there to help those involved in the 9-11 tragedy, the Tsunami disaster and now the Katrina Hurricane. United Way is “People Helping People” and that is what we do best everyday!
